Save Ammo Costs: One Shot Zero Technology Explained

The Sightmark Wraith Mini Thermal has “One Shot” zero capabilities

I normally tell folks that the cheapest part of their hunt is the ammo, and to shoot as many rounds at their trophy animal as they need to, to put it down.

That being said, in 2025 (almost 2026) ammo IS expensive, especially if you’re using premium hunting ammo. The ammo I use on most hunts ranges from $60-$90/box of 20 rounds, and when I travel outside of New England for a hunt, I’m limited on how much ammo I can take with me on a plane.

One thing I’ve learned after airplane travel is to ALWAYS check the zero on your gun before you head out to hunt. The gorillas that are in charge of handling your luggage do NOT give a shit if your $2500 rifle and $3000 scope are handled with care or not. We found this out the hard way this season in Texas, when a perfectly zeroed rifle ended up over 1 foot off zero, once unpacked from the gun case.

Normally, it’s not that big of a deal, if I was home, or had access to a case of the ammo I use…but, being 1800 miles away, meant I was limited to what I had on hand and ONLY what I had on hand, to re-zero, and then hunt with for 4 nights.

Luckily, I was using a Sightmark Wraith HD, which has a 1 shot zero feature. Honestly, this is probably the smartest technology, and most kick ass feature of the Sightmark digital scopes. You shoot at a target, see where your round hits, open the “zero” menu, then pretend you’re back in Geometry class and use a Y and X axis to dial in the round’s point of impact vs point of aim…hit ZERO and boom…you’re done.

Now, I always shoot an extra round or two JUST to confirm…but I’m OCD when it comes to that stuff anyways. So, even when ammo IS expensive to shoot, using a digital scope with “one shot zero” can definitely save your hunt!
